Housing

H.E.R.O. aims to provide housing for Haitian orphans and street children to maintain a stable environment where children can become well adjusted citizens of society. H.E.R.O. is in the process of acquiring land for the development of a permanent residence. The development will include a dormitory and bathrooms for the children, kitchen facilities, classrooms and computer lab, a residence for the H.E.R.O. country director and staff, vegetable garden, community clinic, as well as a guest house for volunteers.

Dormitory

The living space for the children will be divided into boys and girls quarters. Each section will have beds, individual storage lockers, and restroom/bathing facilities. The dormitory is designed to house 15 children in each section, with additional dormitory structures planned when expansion is possible. The dormitory will be designed so that personal space for each child is maximized while maintaining a space for social interaction. The materials required to maintain the dormitory include beds, mattresses, linen supplies, toiletries, and mosquito nets.

Kitchen Facilities

The kitchen facility will incorporate a dining area capable of providing three nutritious meals daily to the children. In addition to its role as a food provider, the kitchen facility will also be used as a classroom for those students wishing to pursue Restaurant Management as a vocation. Students will learn about the process of food preparation, nutrition, and the skills necessary to become proficient delivering high quality meals to customers.

Classrooms

While the majority of education for the children will take place off-campus at neighborhood primary and secondary schools, H.E.R.O. feels that it is necessary to provide on-site classroom opportunities as well. In addition to being a place for homework completion, the classrooms will be utilized for instruction in English, the arts, and remediation/acceleration courses in correspondence with the ability level of each individual child. By providing additional educational opportunities beyond the traditional school classroom, the children will work towards reaching maximum potential in all areas.

Computer Lab

The computer lab is a necessary component in our educational goals to prepare the children for the technological needs of the 21st century. The children will have daily access to the internet, instruction in the use of software and internet based applications, and real world application of these programs to their current lives. Furthermore, the computer lab will enable our children interested in pursuing a track in computer technology, programming, or web design to receive cutting edge instruction.

Director and Staff Residence

The nature of H.E.R.O.’s program requires the continuous monitoring of the children. It is therefore necessary to create a residence for the director and resident staff who will be responsible for the monitoring of the children. The director and staff residence will include a small home for the director and dormitory facilities for the staff with separate restroom and bathing facilities. It is a necessity that the children be monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By creating a residence that is both comfortable and functional for the director and staff, they will be better equipped and able to perform the required duties.

Vegetable Garden

The vegetable garden serves a dual purpose. It often becomes difficult to purchase a large amount of produce for a reasonable price, making it unfeasible to provide nutritious meals on a consistent basis. The vegetable garden will allow for year-round cultivation of many necessary ingredients in our meals. Second, the vegetable garden will also serve as a tool for instruction for those students that wish to pursue farming as a vocation. Students will be responsible for the initiation and maintenance of the vegetable garden, providing real world skills that have largely become extinct in the urban areas of Haiti.

Community Clinic

The community clinic is a vital part of the residence. Foremost, the clinic will employ a full time nurse and on-call doctor to provide the necessary health services for the H.E.R.O. children. Furthermore, the community clinic will provide needed health services to the local community of Nippes, one of many areas in Haiti that suffers from lack of free, affordable, and adequate health care. The clinic will also serve as an internship opportunity for those children in our program that wish to pursue medical careers. Haiti has a shortage of qualified nurses and doctors, and by offering our children the opportunity to experience first-hand the skills and knowledge necessary for this career, they will have a head start towards following this career path.

Guest House

H.E.R.O. was founded partly by individuals that came from the United States to see for themselves the culture and community of Haiti. We want to provide this opportunity to others, so that they can experience first-hand the amazing people of Haiti, and at the same time provide volunteer services for our program. The guest house will be designed to house short and long term volunteers that want to expand their worldly knowledge while at the same time providing an invaluable service to Haiti. Through this program, groups and individuals will be welcomed, housed, and incorporated into the daily operation of H.E.R.O., exposing our visitors to the need in Haiti and the programs that are being offered by H.E.R.O. to help the most vulnerable population, our children.
